Dye VL Pigmentation and Redness Treatment
What Is Dye VL?
Dye VL is one of our favorite all-around treatments for the two things that age skin faster than just about anything else: brown spots from sun damage, and stubborn facial redness. It uses what is called narrow band light, a more focused, more targeted version of the broader IPL or BBL treatments you might have heard about. Instead of hitting your skin with a wide range of wavelengths, Dye VL zeroes in on the exact ones that brown spots and broken blood vessels absorb best. The result is a more precise treatment, and the calm, untouched skin around your spots stays calm.
Here is how it works in plain English. The light is absorbed by the brown pigment in sun spots and freckles, breaking it down so your body can quietly clear it away over the next week or two. At the same time, that same light gets absorbed by the unwanted blood vessels behind redness and broken capillaries, gently shutting them down so your body can reabsorb them. Two of the most frustrating skin concerns, addressed in a single appointment.
One treatment, two techniques: One of the things that sets a good Dye VL session apart is how it is delivered. For brown spots and pigment, we use a firmer pressure to push the light deeper into the spot. For redness, rosacea, and broken capillaries, we use a lighter touch closer to the surface where the vessels live. Your provider switches between the two as we move across your face, which is why a Dye VL session feels genuinely customized to whatever your skin needs that day.
What your appointment actually looks like: A typical session takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You will wear protective eye shields, and we will glide the handpiece across your face. Most clients describe the feeling as a quick warm snap, like a tiny rubber band tap. No needles, no numbing required for most people, and you can go right back to your day. People call it the lunchtime glow for a reason.
Is Dye VL Right for You?
Dye VL is a great fit for anyone dealing with the visible signs of sun and time: sun spots, age spots, freckles, uneven patches of brown, rosacea, persistent facial flushing, broken capillaries around the nose and cheeks, diffuse redness, and small vascular spots. It is one of the most-requested treatments on our menu because it tackles so much in a single appointment.
Dye VL works best on fair to medium skin tones, where the contrast between pigment and skin makes the light most effective. If you have a deeper skin tone, we are not going to leave you out, we will look at your skin honestly at consultation and steer you toward a treatment that is safer and more predictable for you. For broken capillaries and redness on deeper skin tones, that is usually our ClearV laser.
Most clients see real, visible improvement after a series of 2 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. A lot then add one or two maintenance sessions a year to keep new sun spots from sneaking back in.
Here is what to expect after a treatment:
- Right after: Some mild redness or warmth, like a light sunburn. It usually fades within a few hours.
- The next few days: This is the part that surprises people. Your brown spots will look darker, almost like little coffee grounds, before they get better. That is the pigment rising to the surface to flake off. Do not panic and do not pick at them.
- About a week later: Those darker spots gently flake away on their own and reveal clearer, more even skin underneath.
- For the redness side: Broken capillaries and diffuse redness fade more gradually over the following weeks as your body reabsorbs the treated vessels.
How to prep your skin: Stay out of the sun and skip the tanning bed and self-tanner for two weeks before your appointment, we need your skin at its natural color so the light can target the right things. Pause retinol, glycolic acid, and other strong actives for about 5 to 7 days. Come in with a clean face: no makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
How to take care of your skin after: The single most important thing is daily mineral SPF 30, every day, no exceptions, the whole point of clearing your sun damage is keeping new spots from settling right back in. Skip hot showers, saunas, and sweaty workouts for the first 24 to 48 hours. Be gentle with your cleansing for a few days, and please do not pick at any darkened spots. Let them flake off naturally, that is when you get the cleanest result.
When Dye VL might not be right for you: If you are pregnant, freshly tanned or sunburned, on Accutane within the past six months, taking a medication that makes your skin sun-sensitive, or in an active cold sore flare, we will need to wait or find another option. If you tend to form thick, raised scars, we will talk that through case by case. Just tell us everything at your consultation and we will figure out the safest, best path for your skin.

Here is why so many of our clients love Dye VL for pigment, redness, and everything in between.

What is the difference between Dye VL and IPL or BBL?
Dye VL uses narrow band light, which is a more focused version of IPL or BBL. Instead of casting a wide range of wavelengths, it zeroes in on the specific ones that brown spots and broken blood vessels absorb best, so your treatment is more precise and the skin around your spots stays calmer. We also switch pressure and technique throughout a session to treat pigment and redness differently, which a standard IPL setup cannot really do.
Does Dye VL hurt?
Most clients describe it as a quick warm snap, like a tiny rubber band tap on the skin. It is brief and very manageable, and most people do not need any numbing. We will check in with you as we go and adjust if anything ever feels like too much.
Why do my spots look darker right after my treatment?
Totally normal, and actually a good sign. Treated brown spots often look darker for a few days, almost like coffee grounds, before they gently flake away. That is the old pigment rising to the surface to leave you. Please do not pick at them. Within about a week they fall away on their own and reveal clearer skin underneath.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients see real change from a series of 2 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. A lot of people then add one or two maintenance sessions a year to keep new sun spots from creeping back in. We will lay out a clear, honest plan for your skin at your consultation.
